Abstract

Faculty often find the task of locating high quality Web 2.0 teaching and learning resources both time-consuming and onerous. Add to that limited professional development training and the dedicated time necessary to learn how to effectively use these tools and it is no wonder that many hesitate to use new Web 2.0 tools in their courses. Unfortunately, many of our students are fully immersed in social media and other Web 2.0 technologies for use in their everyday lives. They’re surprised and disappointed when these technologies are underutilized in their higher education experience.

To solve this professional development problem faculty, instructional design staff, and human resources staff from ten, public institutions in New York state came together and created a self-directed, learning community whose main objective was to help faculty and staff master relevant Web 2.0 tools for integration into their teaching.
