Abstract

In a teacher education institution ready access to information is important to students for making programmatic decisions and to faculty and staff for making administrative decisions. In addition, a place to share knowledge and experiences is important in developing a sense of community. Web sites are one of the dominant avenues for obtaining information about teacher education programs. This document outlines a systematic approach to the design and development of effective teacher education web sites. One institution’s experience will be used as an illustration. This will outline the process of design, formative assessment, and ongoing attempts to collect data on the effectiveness of this initiative. The web site design was derived from data collected on the user experience and ongoing maintenance was expedited by a content management system (CMS). Well-designed and engaging institutional portals benefit all stakeholders.
