Abstract

The improvement of students’ opportunities to learn in school classrooms is often challenged by the complexity of the work of teaching, the lack of repositories of usable knowledge of teaching, and the relative isolation of teachers. Technologies such as video records of instructional practice and online communities of practice may contribute important help in bringing teachers, teacher developers, and researchers to collaborate in improving the quality of teaching. This paper presents the implementation and evaluation of LessonSketch, a web-based virtual laboratory for teacher development. We use cartoon-based materials, rich-media annotation and authoring tools, and advanced communication and collaboration tools as key contents and technologies to engage teachers in learning about teaching practice. LessonSketch also provides teacher educators and researchers with authoring tools to devise online experiences for teacher training and research on teacher thinking and knowledge.
