Abstract

Teachers are increasingly required to utilize ICT in their lessons in order to build up the competency of their students. In Japan, teachers typically acquire the skills needed for designing lessons that include ICT during their teacher training courses. However, recently student teachers have had to do their teacher training online due to the global spread of COVID-19, which presents a challenge in that the best approaches to fostering student teachers’ skills in this scenario are not yet clear. To address this challenge, we came up with an approach where student teachers acquire the ICT skills they need through simulated lessons. We then conducted practice classes based on this approach and investigated the effects. Our findings showed that student teachers were able to consider new ways of utilizing ICT in lessons. However, some of them struggled to design lessons that included learning activities they had not considered before.
